Advanced FBC (2026) 9th Edition: Wind Design Requirements for Commercial Overhead Door Assemblies - Online - AIA #: DL26WDR / FBC #: 1357.0

Hours: 2 HSW/FBC

THIS IS AN ADVANCED COURSE

Introduction

This course explores the evolution of Florida's wind design requirements and their impact on commercial overhead door assemblies. Participants will examine key Florida Building Code and ASCE 7 provisions, product approval and testing requirements, and the differences between coiling and sectional door systems. The course also addresses opening protection, delegated engineering, storm shelter requirements, and design considerations for critical facilities, incorporating lessons from recent hurricanes and updates to the 9th Edition Florida Building Code.

Description

This advanced course examines the Florida Building Code, ASCE 7 wind design requirements, and Florida Product Approval systems as they relate to commercial coiling and sectional overhead door assemblies in hurricane-prone regions. Topics include wind design fundamentals, exposure categories, wind-borne debris requirements, enclosure classifications, impact and cyclic pressure testing, and Miami-Dade Notices of Acceptance (NOAs). Participants will also explore ICC 500 storm shelter requirements, delegated engineering coordination, and performance considerations for commercial overhead door systems. Special applications involving healthcare facilities, fire stations, data centers, and Risk Category III and IV structures will be addressed, along with lessons learned from recent storms and developments in the Florida Building Code, 9th Edition (2026).

Objective

Upon completion of this course, participants will understand Florida Building Code and ASCE 7 wind design requirements for commercial overhead door assemblies, including exposure categories, wind-borne debris regions, and enclosure classifications. They will be able to identify product approval and testing requirements, compare coiling and sectional door systems, recognize delegated engineering responsibilities and common specification issues, and apply code requirements to healthcare, emergency facilities, and other mission-critical buildings.
