Description:
Hai ZHANG is Chinese-born and based in New York City. He studied architecture in Chongqing University in Chongqing, China and earned his master’s degree in Architecture at Florida International University in 2001. After then, he had worked with Rafael Vinoly Architects and Handel Architects.
In 2008, ZHANG chose to devote himself to explore his concerns for the human condition through photography, yet often with architecture in his mind. Since then, he has been traveling regularly back to China to photograph and conduct research on the ever-changing and sprawling Chinese urbanized landscape.
From 2009 to 2010, as a fellow of Rafael Vinoly Architecture Research Fellowship, ZHANG carried out an intensive inquiry on underserved and left-out urban dwellers in Shanghai and Shenzhen. The stories were delivered through the combination of photography and narrative writing. Mixing in up-close contextual imagery together with first hand information, the project is one of four included in the book Pressures and Distortions: City Dwellers and Builders and Critics, published in New York in 2012.
ZHANG’s works have been exhibited at the Museum of Chinese in America in New York, the Godwin-Ternbach Museum in New York, Kansas State University, and in other galleries and institutional venues in the US, Costa Rica, and China. He has been awarded in International Photography Awards 2010 and artist-in-residency from the Monte Azul Center of Arts of Costa Rica. In the past, ZHANG has lectured at the New School’s India-China Institute, Queens Museum of Art, the Museum of Chinese in America, Asia Society and in many other cultural institutes. ZHANG is a member of adjunct faculty at Parsons The New School for Design in New York City.
