Award winning Architect, Rick Gonzalez, AIA, REG Architects will present insight into Joseph Urban's uniquely creative designs at the beautiful Mar-A-Lago in Palm Beach.

Rick Gonzalez, AIA, is well known for his preservation efforts, including the 1916 Palm Beach County Courthouse. He is a member of AIA and his design standards have been used as examples for Palm Beach County's Architectural Guidelines, Florida CNU Guidebook and ULI Land Developement Handbook. He is one of the founding principals of the firm REG Architects, Inc., a past AIA "Firm of the Year" award winner. Professional and Architectural awards include the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation Award for the Palm Beach County 1916 Courthouse Restoration, the Sun Sentinel's "Excalibur Award," AIA Palm Beach Honor Award for Design for "The Harriet" at City Place in West Palm Beach and Miami Beach City Golf Clubhouse and the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation Award for Don'd Trump's Mar-A-Lago Club in Palm Beach. Mar-A-Lago was the winner of the "100 Years 100 Places" competition earlier this year in the  Historic Category and number 5 in the State.

Joseph Urban (1872-1933) was born in Vienna, Austria and studied there at the Art Academy under Baron Carl Hassauer and at the Polytechnicum. Urban first visited American in order to design the Austrian Pavillion for the 1904 St. Lous Fair. He eventually immigrated to the United States in 1912 to become the art director of the Boston Opera Company. Two years later he moved to New York where he designed productions for the Ziegfeld Follies and the Metropolitian Opera.  He is known as the first major designer to carefully coordinate colors and to employ suble lighting to enhance his color schemes. Urban's influence and theatrically inspired architectural designs in Palm Beach are best exemplified by his work on Mar-A-Lago, the Bath and Tennis Club and the Paramount Theater. He was also noted for his work on the side illustrating children's books.
