Joseph Urban (1872-1933) was born in Vienna, Austria and studied there at the Art Academy under Baron Carl Hassauer and at the Polytechnicum. Urban first visited American in order to design the Austrian Pavillion for the 1904 St. Lous Fair. He eventually immigrated to the United States in 1912 to become the art director of the Boston Opera Company. Two years later he moved to New York where he designed productions for the Ziegfeld Follies and the Metropolitian Opera. He is known as the first major designer to carefully coordinate colors and to employ suble lighting to enhance his color schemes. Urban's influence and theatrically inspired architectural designs in Palm Beach are best exemplified by his work on Mar-A-Lago, the Bath and Tennis Club and the Paramount Theater.
