FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Tallahassee, FL, April 1, 2012—Join individuals across the country to celebrate National Preservation Month this May. Discover America’s Hidden Gems” is the theme of the celebration sponsored by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
The Florida Historic Capitol Museum and the Tallahassee Trust for Historic Preservation, Inc., invite you to join us on Thursday, May 3, 2012, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. to kick off National Historic Preservation Month! In honor of this year’s preservation month theme, we hope you will re-discover one of Florida’s most unique gems, the Historic Capitol. Join us for this free, fun-filled event featuring: Architectural Tours of the Historic Capitol Dome Restoration Project – Q & A Session with the Architect and Builder Florida Photographic Collection Slideshow Drinks and hors d’oeuvres.
The scaffolding recently removed, the Historic Capitol building is boasting a beautifully restored shiny copper dome and cupola roof, along with a new coat of paint (view photo gallery below). Representatives from the Department of Management Services, who oversaw the dome restoration project, the project architects, MLD Architects, Inc., and the contractors from Childers Construction will all be on hand to answer your questions. You will have a chance to view the architectural drawings from various phases of Historic Capitol projects. Come take an architectural tour of the Historic Capitol lead by an expert on the 1902 restoration or view a slideshow from the State Archives’ Florida Photographic Collection featuring properties throughout Florida listed in either the National or Local Register of Historic Places. One lucky person will walk away with a framed 8X10 Black and White print of the Historic Capitol as a door prize!
Since the National Trust for Historic Preservation created Preservation Week in 1971 to spotlight grassroots preservation efforts in America, it has grown into an annual celebration observed by small towns and big cities with events ranging from architectural and historic tours and award ceremonies, to fundraising events, educational programs and heritage travel opportunities. Due to its overwhelming popularity, in 2005, the National Trust for Historic Preservation extended the celebration to the entire month of May and declared it Preservation Month to provide an even longer opportunity to celebrate the diverse and unique heritage of our country’s cities and states and enable more Americans to become involved in the growing preservation movement.

Florida Historic Capitol Museum The Florida Historic Capitol Museum serves to illuminate the past, present and future connection between the people of Florida and their political institutions through programs of civic education, historic interpretation, and preservation. Since 1845, the Historic Capitol has been the central symbol of Florida state government. Restored to its 1902 appearance, the Florida Historic Capitol Museum stands as an icon at the center of Florida’s Capitol complex.
