Advanced FBC: 8th Edition (2023): The Role of the Architect in Slip, Trip, and Fall Accidents-Online - Course #: DL24RA/1257.0 - Expires 3/13/27

Hours: 2 HSW/FBC

THIS IS AN ADVANCED COURSE

Introduction

This seminar focuses on the architect’s role in designing safe and functional paths of travel and ensuring level changes are both ergonomically sound and compliant with building codes.

Description

The presentation will cover Florida Building Code requirements for stairs, steps, ramps, and level changes, along with Florida Accessibility and ADA standards. It will also introduce standards of care from the National Floor Safety Institute (NFSI) and guidelines from the ASTM F-13 Committee on walkway surfaces and Coefficient of Friction (COF) testing. Participants will explore real-world examples of floor treatments and level changes, assess testing methods for slipperiness, and review best practices for safe design.

Objective

1) Participants will understand and apply the Florida Building Code, ADAAG, and FL Accessibility requirements to design code compliant level changes, steps, stairs, ramps, and paths of travel.
2) Participants will understand the Slip Meter Coefficient of Friction testing methods as determined by NFSI and ASTM F-13.
3) Participants will be able to analyze good and bad examples of floor treatments and level changes, and determine if they are design defects, construction errors, or user error.
