Emphasizing the city as ecology, UACDC has developed a repertoire of place-building models in watershed urbanism, context-sensitive street design, transit-oriented development, low impact development, and agricultural urbanism among others. This problemscape addresses “wicked” problems of the built environment and design’s role in building urban resiliency.


1. Understand the concept of “wicked” problems and the role of design in addressing environmental complexity

2. Demonstrate the leadership potential of design in developing solutions toward community and planetary resiliency

3. Develop appreciation for the necessity of meta-disciplinary thinking and research in future practice

4. Learn about ecosystem services and design’s role in providing them
